When Should I Begin Collecting Social Security?

When we explain the financial planning process with our clients, one of the most frequent questions asked by clients nearing retirement age is: Should I begin collecting Social Security benefits at age 62?

There is no right time to begin collecting Social Security benefits, but the age at which you begin receiving benefits will affect how much retirement income you will receive over your lifetime, so you should weigh the consequences carefully. Keep in mind that if you collect Social Security before your full retirement age, your benefit will be permanently reduced. Depending on the year you were born, you'll receive between 25% and 30% less per month if you collect benefits at age 62 than if you wait until full retirement age. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that collecting benefits at age 62 is unwise. In fact, unless you live to an especially old age, you may actually end up with more money if you start collecting Social Security benefits at age 62 than if you wait until full retirement age, because you'll receive more benefit checks.

There are, however, good reasons to wait until full retirement age to start collecting benefits. For example, if you work full-time past age 62, you'll have the opportunity to increase your eventual retirement benefit, particularly if you are in your peak earnings years, because your benefit will be figured using your 35 highest earnings years. Additionally, if you'll barely scrape by after you retire you may want to receive as much as possible from Social Security each month.

If you begin to receive Social Security retirement (or survivor's) benefits before you reach full retirement age, money you earn over a certain limit will reduce the amount of your Social Security benefit. In 2010, your benefit will be reduced by $1 for every $2 of earnings in excess of $14, 160.

Other things to consider include whether other people will be eligible to receive benefits based on your work record, your estimated life expectancy and if you have other income to support you if you delay taking your benefits.

On the flip side, if you delay collecting Social Security after full retirement age, you will receive a bigger check every month. However, how much bigger depends upon what year you reach full retirement age and how long you postpone collecting benefits. The chart below shows how much more you'll receive for every year you delay collecting benefits past your full retirement age, based on the year you were born (up to age 70, when you automatically start receiving Social Security).

When I was a kid, my dad, older brother and I took a summer road trip through the Southwest desert. When my dad wanted to stop for the night he would just search for a cheap motel and one night we drove for hours unable to find any vacancies. Apparently, the Army was engaged in desert training, but soldiers were finding rattlesnakes in their tents and sleeping bags, so the soldiers were stacked in the local motels. Many investors are sleeping in rattlesnake-infested areas unaware of the dangers. Interest rates on CDs could remain low for years to come, as evidenced by Japan, which has endured nearly 19 years of recession, super-slow growth and deflation. Imagine needing 5% income on your portfolio and getting only a 2% yield – leaving you with a decreasing principal, a decreasing yield and, therefore, a decreasing amount to invest. Thankfully, just like the U.S. military, my dad had the sense of placing us in a safe hotel room, so we could dream of the magnificence and splendor of the Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains rather than worry about rattlesnakes.

If i have 1 of 2 license plate lights out can i still get pulled over?
I was pulled over but I'm curious if thats allowed. I know the real reason was because i was watched leaving a real cheap motel 6. the officer was parked accross the street whith his lights on just watching for anyone leaving. the officer told me the reason i was pulled over was that i had a license pate out, but my car is a "nissan centra se-r" 03 or 04 and it has two license plate lights. I would have figured that having one would be enough for my vehicle to be street ligal. thanks james and you are right about the fix it ticket and i have already had it fixed but its not ignorant to notice that law enforcement these days are full of ass holes who are trying to find easy tickets to give out. I find it lazy, sorry if it affends you.

my boss breached my contract, could i go on ei?
I am a superintendent at a high end condominium in toronto ontario canada. The building is 2 years old now and I have been here from the start. The board of directors replaced the original property management company due to them not bending over for them. They introduced a lazy cheap company that has been running the place into the ground. The new company has been with us for 9 months. There are many issues at hand, unsafe working enviroment, lack of maintenece, my contract not being honored. Lets start off with them replacing the current companies such as the cleaners and concierge with cheap motel 6 like companies as the property management itself. I was promised nothing will change however it turns out I get to clean 1/3rd of the building on a daily basis. I have not had a day off in 8 months now since the new cleaners and security have been in. I work 7 days a week with a minimum of 6 hours a day on weekends. I receive no extra compensation. My contract states i shall receive tools, work clothes and cell phone. I have been asking for a working cell phone for 9 months ( the original one receives no signal and i need to get calls for garbage pick up or else i miss it) so i am forced to use my personal cell phone. The managers also use this number as a contact. It has been over 3 months for work clothes and serveral more for petty cash or tools. 6 weeks ago i handed in recipts (250$ for tools i spent) and have not seen a dime. My contract also states that i am to have 2 days off one week and 1 the following. Nothing gets done around the building. The office makes mistakes on a weekly basis that i myself correct. I am not respected and due to my age ( 23)nor i am not listened too. The property manager does not even call any more when she comes by because I always give her a list of items that we need to take care of. She comes once a week for 10 min to pick up notes and that is it. My stress is going through the roof, I can barely function with my wife or doggie at the end of the day due to being so burnt out. The conceirge and residents agree with me they are trash. Also the garbage chutes have no locks on them so when i have to do daily cleaning under them, at times bottles come down. The only line of defence for this is a notice and tape on the chute room doors which have proved not to work. I asked her nicely for months now can we get saftey locks but nothing has been done. It took the property manager 7 months to order in a standard garbage bin for me. Long story short I would like to go on ei and take classes. I love my building and my condo owners but i cant keep up with everyones job. Would i be eligable concerning the cercumstance?
